House on Mango Street Theme

There are several vignettes in the book that talk about pride, and family story's. I believe that the theme for this is "blood is thicker than water". There are several situations where the family is going through hard times together that make them stronger as a family. When Esperanza points out her home to a nun, she doesn't calm that she is disappointed in her family.

Direct and indirect characterization.

In the short vignette "There was a old women she had so many children she didn't know what to do" an example of an indirect characterization would be that the author really had hard feelings towards the children. I can say this because from reading this piece the tone I got was hateful.
"There are without respect for all things living, including themselves.

In the short vignette "Papa wakes up tired in the dark" The authors grandfather dies, and for the first time in her life she sees her father cry. Generally speaking she says, her father is brave. The Direct characterization in this piece is that the authors father is brave.
